Beautiful Order
IMPULSE Forum @ Petzel
February 25, 2026
  |
6:00 PM - 9:30 PM

Join IMPULSE Magazine on Wednesday, February 25th, for IMPULSE Forum, a community-based conversation program. Doors will open at 6 pm, and the discussion will begin by 6:30 pm.

In the epilogue to The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction, Walter Benjamin argues that fascism introduces aesthetics into political life. Rather than transforming material conditions, it offers expression — spectacle, choreography, affect. Politics becomes image.

To think through this proposition in a contemporary context, participants are asked to watch No Church in the Wild. The stylized confrontation between protesters and police, the fetishization of tension, and the aesthetic framing of violence invite reflection on Benjamin’s claim that politics can become aestheticized rather than resolved.

The aim is not to draw direct equivalences, but to consider whether aesthetic organization — whether monumental, spectacular, or minimal and “neutral” — participates in shaping political imagination.

“Beautiful Order: Aesthetics, Myth, and the Stabilization of Power” will be moderated by Józefina Chętko and hosted at Petzel (520 W 25th St)  in conversation with an exhibition of works by Troy Brauntuch.

Transnational Feminisms

6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Join IMPULSE Magazine on Tuesday, January 27th, for IMPULSE Forum, a community-based conversation program. Doors will open at 6 pm, and the discussion will begin by 6:30 pm.

For this forum, we are pairing two texts that arise from and address very different contexts. Veena Das’s The Figure of the Abducted Woman: The Citizen as Sexed is a critical look at Indian history through the lens of gender, while Grace Lee Boggs' Revolution As New Beginning is more grounded in activist practice and future-oriented. Given the location of this art gallery within a criminal justice college, we will ask about the scope and role of contemporary art practices in larger social justice and movement politics. We will consider the strengths, vulnerabilities and strategies open to aesthetic practices in this light, asking how art spaces ought to navigate our tense political context. Download the discussion guide here!

“Transnational Feminisms: What is the role of contemporary arts spaces?” will be moderated by Macushla Robinson and hosted at The Anya and Andrew Shiva Gallery at John Jay College of Criminal Justice  (860 11th Avenue, inside the John Jay College of Criminal Justice) in conversation with their current show “On Absence.” The show is curated by Achia Anzi and Oorja Garg and features the work of Payal Arya, Yogesh Barve, Sonam Chaturvedi, Priyanka D’Souza, Priyesh Gothwal, Priyank Gothwal, Shilpa Gupta, Rahul Juneja, Shaurya Kumar, Swati Kumari, Raqs Media Collective, and Mohit Shelare.

6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

French philosopher François Laruelle argues that almost all philosophy—even anti-philosophical philosophy—imposes abstract structures on reality, producing a habit of thinking that is seemingly dialectical but in effect essentializing. In his proposition for non-philosophy, he imagines a radical rejection of these tendencies, insisting that thinking should remain grounded in lived, material conditions rather than in abstract conceptual systems.

“Material Philosophy: Thinking Through the Noise” will be moderated by @natychuk and hosted at Magenta Plains (149 Canal Street) in conversation with Joseph Nechvatal’s show “Information Noise Saturation.”

Dual Principles
IMPULSE Forum @ Arsenal Contemporary
November 18, 2025
  |
11:30 AM – 12:30 PM

Join IMPULSE Magazine for IMPULSE Forum, a community-based conversation program seeking to build our local IMPULSE community. Each themed conversation will invite our audience to create new, relevant discourse set across partner galleries and project spaces in New York City.

This month’s forum, titled “Dual Principles: Jungian Dichotomies”, will be moderated by Matilda Lin Berke hosted at Arsenal Contemporary (21 Cortlandt Alley, 2nd Floor) in collaboration with Night Gallery, Los Angeles and Pangée, Montreal in conversation with an exhibition of paintings by Darby Milbrath, entitled “The Raving Ones”.

“Dual Principles” will consider Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung’s description of dichotomies such as The Apollinian and The Dionysian, the aesthetic and the religious and the libidinal and subconscious as they pertain to aesthetics in visual art. Historically, artworks have also been categorically assigned to binaries, such as iconographic and iconoclastic, figurative and abstract, painting and sculpture etc. Contemporary art has arguably progressed beyond strict taxonomic limitations, but at the same time, new rigidities have emerged. To what extent are these binary descriptions useful? In the current moment of contemporary art, how can we apply Jung’s theory to artwork that may challenge the boundaries of these distinctions?

For this edition of IMPULSE Forum, we invite participants to bring an art book with them that feels relevant to the theme. This could be an artist whose work relates to discussion, a book of poetry, a zine, a children's book- you name it! We look forward to seeing what everyone chooses to bring!

RSVP for a FREE ticket and receive a discussion guide and reference materials in your inbox!

ISO hot takes, actually funny people, people who call it like it is, people who can strike pen to paper with emotional flair, and people who have read too much Baudrillard. We NEED you. The atrocity of TOYS! TOYS! TOYS! is fertile territory for a SMEAR CAMPAIGN.

But seriously, what is bad criticism? Recently, two critics aired their grievances on the topic. Now it’s your turn to put your word in on this ongoing debate. Is negative criticism good? We’re curious to find out.

Join IMPULSE Magazine for the third session of our new talk series, IMPULSE Forum, a community-based conversation program seeking to build our local IMPULSE community. Each themed conversation will invite our audience to create new, relevant discourse set across partner galleries and project spaces in New York City.

This month’s forum, titled “Copy of A Copy: Does Art Need Copyright?”, will be held on Tuesday, September 23rd, 6:00 pm at Microscope Gallery (525 W 29th St, 2nd Floor) and will conclude with drinks at a nearby bar!

“Copy of a Copy” seeks to address the uses and limitations of copyright in the fine arts world. Central to the conversation is a text by Amy Adler, “Why Art Does Not Need Copyright,” which argues that the logic of copyright as a tool to economically incentivize creativity actually has the opposite effect, due to the art world’s prizing of authenticity and authorship in attributing value to an artwork. While her argument is certainly compelling, its logics apply more reasonably to “traditional” mediums such as painting or sculpture. Can her argument be applied to lens-based artists making work in the digital age?
